THE STORY OF KING MIDAS proved to be the last completed film in the series. Like all of the short subjects, this one is delightful and is filled with nice animation touches. Ray's original intention was to make 15 to 20 of these films but during the making of THE TORTOISE AND THE HARE, Ray realized that it would take far more time than he was willing to commit to see the projects all the way through. During the recent documentary that was broadcast on AMC (THE HARRYHAUSEN CHRONICLES) some of the footage from THE TORTOISE AND THE HARE was shown. It appeared, from that footage, that it might have been his most ambitious subject for the series. With the conclusion of KING MIDAS Ray was more than ready to move into the feature films again and that would be realized with THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS.
